HISTORY OF CASHMERE
The history of cashmere stretches back centuries to the Kashmir region of India, where they produce beautiful warm fibres from the fleeces of its goats. After being discovered in the 14th Century and being brought back toward the Middle East and Europe, the material became known as Kashmir and eventually Cashmere.
WHAT IS CASHMERE?
As mentioned, cashmere fibre comes from goats and is in fact hair, as opposed to wool which comes from sheep. It is this difference that makes the material smoother and softer than sheep’s wool.
Cashmere yarns that go to make up cashmere material are woven from fibres that come directly from the goat's undercoat. Many goats have a two layer fleece and as such, cashmere can be produced from a large number of different breeds aside from the Cashmere goat itself. Some notable breeds that produce wonderful cashmere include the Pashmina, Alashanzuoqi and Australian Cashmere varieties.
THE BENEFITS OF CASHMERE AS A MATERIAL
Cashmere has many favourable properties that make it a desirable material to make a garment or accessory from. Amongst its most prized properties is the material’s warmth, weight, and softness. All of these make cashmere the perfect material for use in luxurious jumpers, cardigans and scarves.
THE VALUE OF CASHMERE
There is no doubt that cashmere is considered to be one of the world's most luxurious materials. This value not only comes from the inherent properties of cashmere but also at the relative scarcity when compared to other materials used for textile production. The yield of pure cashmere each year is low, with only a small amount of the raw material available for the sumptuous pure cashmere fibres that we all love. Popularity and low yield lead to the increased value of pure cashmere as a commodity.
